How to make your documents searchable by AI with an MCP server

Updated

Upload your files to a documents server in Kaiva Bridge. It reads them, including scans and tables, and serves them as an MCP server with tools that search the documents and read a page in full. Your AI client then answers from your documents, citing the passage and page.

Step by step

  1. Create a documents serverChoose New server, then Documents.
  2. Add your filesDrop in PDF, Word (.docx), PNG, JPEG, plain text or Markdown files, up to 25 MB and 500 pages each. Bridge reads them in the background and shows each file's progress.
  3. It goes liveThe server publishes itself when its first document is ready. Try a search in the console to see what your AI will get back.
  4. Connect your AI clientCopy the address from the Connect tab and add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client.

From a terminal, for a single file or a whole folder:

Terminal
npx @kaiva/bridge login
npx @kaiva/bridge push handbook --docs ./policies
npx @kaiva/bridge install handbook --client claude-code

What your AI can do with it

The server has three tools: search_documents finds the passages that answer a question, read_document reads one page in full, and list_documents shows what is there. You can also save a search as its own tool, pinned to one document if you like.

Uploading a file with the same name replaces that document with the new version, and the old one stays searchable until the new one is ready.

Free includes 3 MCP servers, 200,000 tool calls a month and 200 pages of documents, with no card.

Other ways to do it

  • Build your own retrieval pipelineParse, chunk, embed and store the documents yourself, then write an MCP server around the search. Full control, and a pipeline to run.
  • Upload files into one chatMost AI apps accept attachments in a conversation. That works for one chat; a documents server works across every client and conversation.
