How to add a custom MCP server to ChatGPT

Updated

Open ChatGPT Plugins, click +, then Add custom MCP server, and paste the server's address as the MCP server URL. Choose OAuth for authentication, create the plugin and sign in with your Kaiva Bridge account. If Add custom MCP server is not there, turn on Developer mode in Settings, Security.

Step by step

  1. Open PluginsGo to chatgpt.com/plugins, click +, then Add custom MCP server. Not there? Turn on Developer mode in Settings, Security.
  2. Paste the addressGive it a name. Under Connection, paste the server's address from its Connect tab as the MCP server URL.
  3. Choose OAuthFor authentication choose OAuth, accept the warning, then click Create as a plugin.
  4. Sign inSign in with your Kaiva Bridge account when asked. ChatGPT can now use the server's tools.

The MCP server URL to paste

ChatGPT adds a remote MCP server by its address. For a Kaiva Bridge server it signs in with OAuth, with no key.

MCP server URL
https://api.kaiv.ai/api/bridge/mcp/your-server

Add the Kaiva Bridge connector to ChatGPT

The same steps with the connector's address let ChatGPT list your servers and create new ones from a spec or a database. ChatGPT has no link that adds a server in one click.

MCP server URL
https://api.kaiv.ai/api/bridge/manage/mcp

If it does not connect

Check the server is published and the address is exactly the one on its Connect tab, and that you chose OAuth. Then run the CLI's check:

Terminal
npx @kaiva/bridge doctor your-server

Other ways to do it

  • The OpenAI APIIn your own code, the Responses API takes the same address as an mcp tool with a gateway key (server_url and authorization); the server's Connect tab shows the exact block.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT ask for Developer mode?
ChatGPT treats MCP servers you add yourself as unreviewed, so Add custom MCP server appears once Developer mode is on (Settings, Security).
Can ChatGPT use a key for a Kaiva Bridge server?
No. Choose OAuth and sign in with your Kaiva Bridge account.
Which authentication do I choose?
OAuth. Accept the warning, then click Create as a plugin.
